Kenneth Blum, PhD, (left) who spoke on the
Neurobiology of Addiction stands still briefly for a photo with Lyle
Murphy, Administrator of Alternative to Meds, San Francisco. Blum is a
pharmacogeneticist whose prolific publications while at the University
of Texas, San Antonio, laid the groundwork for the genetic paradigm of
addiction and who coined the term Reward Deficiency Syndrome now used
by others to characterize the link between deficiency of the dopamine
neurotransmitter and cravings for self-medicating drugs and behavior.
