Michael Leotaud, LCSW, Supervisor at Kaiser Permanente's Chemical Dependency Recovery Program in Sacramento, practices needle-free acupuncture detox using a tiny magnet on a piece of tape applied to the ear of Brenda Norton, an addiction counselor with Mendocino County Public Health. In the background Clark Inkanish, ICADC, Executive Director of TK Wolf, Inc. of Tulsa, OK, a speaker at the symposium on the use of cranial electrotherapy devices, takes notes as Allen T. Green, Chair of the CARA Board of Directors arrives to observe the workshop. In the far distance is Sadhu Singh Khalsa, LISW, MSW, Founder, Total Health Recovery Program and Healing the Warrior Program, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Kenneth Blum, PhD, (left) who spoke on the Neurobiology of Addiction stands still briefly for a photo with Lyle Murphy, Administrator of Alternative to Meds, San Francisco. Blum is a pharmacogeneticist whose prolific publications while at the University of Texas, San Antonio, laid the groundwork for the genetic paradigm of addiction and who coined the term Reward Deficiency Syndrome now used by others to characterize the link between deficiency of the dopamine neurotransmitter and cravings for self-medicating drugs and behavior.
